Growing Onion Sets

I’ve been busy researching university extensions and grower sites because I was really confused about growing onion sets, seeds and plants.

I was particularly confused about what onion sets were. Magic Valley Growers came to the rescue…

Onion sets are small bulbs less than 1″ in diameter.

The consensus seems to be that planting from onion sets is probably the easiest and you can plant them later in the season.

The University of Minnesota Extension says…

Buy onion sets that are firm and marble size but have not sprouted.

You can also grow your own sets from onion seeds the first year so you can plant them as sets the following spring. Now that’s something to consider.
