- Since these products aren’t screaming organic which I prefer, I’ll assume they’re not, but he is absolutely right about the soil. For any bulb or root vegetable the soil needs to be loose (crooked carrots anyone?), and what your soil needs will depend on where you live. I do like the idea of planting onions close to get a good harvest of spring onions and mature onions…great conservation of space. Plant Onions
- Oh my! It’s so much fun and last summer I ate out of my garden for the whole summer and even into the fall. The only vegetable I bought were onions which is why I’m trying to grow them now. Given I spent considerably less than $50, I’d say it was a bargain and everything tasted so much better. Plant Onions

- Onions have a very long growing season and to get anything other than green onions, you need to start onion seeds inside very early in the season. This heating pad idea is good as is knowing enough to stop using it once the seeds have germinated. Plant Onions

In researching when to plant onions I found it depends on several factors.
1. Are you planting onion seeds, sets, bulbs or plants? Seeds take 3-4 months to harvest so unless you’re in a very warm area. Onion sets can take up to 60+.
2. What type of onion you’re planning to grow? You can grow onions for food and they also make beautiful ornamental flowers. Whichever you choose, there are varieties within varieties and each has it’s own particular requirements.
3. Where do you live? Since when to plant your onions depends on when the danger of frost in over and the temperature of the soil. This varies from region to region so be sure to check with an authoritative source.
4. How many hours of sunlight do you have? The are short day and long day varieties of onions.
When in doubt one of the best sources for information on planting and growing onions (or anything else for that matter) is your local state university extension. Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Illinois, Minnesota and Texas are just a few that have agricultural extensions.
